Review - Blue Valentine (2010)

Starring Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams and John Doman.
Directed by Derek Cianfrance.

Derek Cianfrance makes his directorial debut with this romance drama 'Blue Valentine'. We meet Dean (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy (Michelle Williams), a married couple with a young daughter. However all is not well in Dean and Cindy's marriage. Director Cianfrance goes on to give us one of the most realistic and emotional showing of a couple falling in and out of love.

It is usually death, an accomplishment or even abuse (whether sexual, physical or mental) which may spark intense emotion in films. But in this case we witness a marriage going downhill, which was not a result of cheating or abuse. Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling gives us a performance to remember; so convincing, so intensely emotional, so realistic and so powerful. I'm sure while you're watching this movie, you wont even remember that there is anyone else in it because you get so emotionally attached to the couple's failing relationship.

I like the director's use of flashbacks in this film. It shows us the happy days of Dean and Cindy when they just met, which contrast to the "dark" days presently in their lives. From what I gathered from the flashbacks, I dont think Cindy really loved Dean as much as he loved her. I believe Dean was a just a good solution to a bad situation that she had found herself in, worst she was dating someone when she met him. What really sparked my emotion while watching this movie was the fact you could really see that Dean is trying hard to make his marriage work, but Cindy just continues to push him away. You feel both characters, not just Dean's pain but also that of a woman who has clearly fallen out of love.

The story in engrossing and engaging and I know a lot of persons can relate to this couple's dilemma. The ending of this film is heart-wrenching and bittersweet. I felt like I was the one who got hurt. Just like Ryan and Michelle's acting, I think director Derek Cianfrance did a superb job in showcasing the birth and end of a relationship. Some persons just fall out of love.
