Review - We're The Millers (2013)
Starring Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston and Will Poutner.
Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber.
Synopsis: A veteran pot dealer creates a fake family as a part of his plan to move a huge shipment of weed into the US from Mexico.
I saw the trailer for this movie and I was not impressed at all. However I rescind my feelings as We're The Millers turned out to be quite a hilarious and fun family road trip. The movie follows David Clark (Jason Sudeikis), a small time drug dealer who assembles a fake family in order to get drugs transported across the US-Mexican border. He assembles a crew and in it are Rose (Jennifer Aniston), Kenny (Will Poutner) and Casey (Emma Roberts). They form his fake family and surprisingly, these characters really clicked together. Jason Sudeikis was hilarious as the leader; he and his family's interactions, dialogue, gags and gimmicks were pretty much on point the entire film. Even Will Poutner's super nerdy character complimented the rest. The other comic reliefs included Nick Offerman, Ed Helms, Kathryn Hahn and even Luis Guzman - they made this movie extremely fun alongside the family. Numerous one-liners so there was never really a dull moment.
The story is interesting enough and easy to follow. It's a vulgar road trip where, of course, we see the main characters start to bond -- as they couldn't stand each other and were rebels in their own way prior to this trip. Given the nature of the story, it wasn't long before an antagonist surfaced, played by Tomer Sisley. Tomer plays the drug lord who got tricked out of his drugs and it wasn't long before this fun fake family road trip became all rowdy and life threatening. The good thing about We're The Millers is that the humor is consistent from start to finish - not that corny stuff we're accustomed to in most comedies these days. The ending is predictable and it does have those cliched family moments towards the end but overall I liked this movie. Jennifer Aniston is pretty good in these comedic roles.
I had low expectations but I enjoyed We're The Millers. The cast worked well together and the humor connected. One of the surprises of 2013.

DeleteCan't say that I loved the hell out of this, but I laughed more than I expected to after the first 30 minutes totally bombed. So it definitely has that going for it. Nice review Shawna.
