Review - The World's End (2013)

Starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Martin Freeman.
Directed by Edgar Wright.

Synopsis: Five friends who reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from 20 years earlier unwittingly become humankind's only hope for survival.

Gary King (Simon Pegg) decides to round up his childhood buddies. These include Steven (Paddy Considine), Andy (Nick Frost), Oliver (Martin Freeman) and Peter (Eddie Marsan). Although reluctant at first to join Gary, the crew proceed on their drinking escapade to which they refer as the Golden Mile. They would visit twelve pubs in their home town and the title of the film refers to the last pub the crew would visit, and also the ending of the world.

You can hardly go wrong with the Pegg-Frost duo. Their chemistry and dialogue are golden and they are able to make even the most serious scenarios hilarious. I expected the same during this "apocalypse" but sadly the movie's plot was a bit of a letdown.

I thought everything was going well in this movie -- well, until the whole "alien invasion" nonsense surfaced. This was not the ending of the world I had imagined for this movie; it was one of the weakest and most nonsensical "apocalypse" I've seen in a film. There was never really a sense of threat nor was it overall believable. Unlike Shaun of The Dead, this movie was not able to pull off its themes as smoothly; even the science fiction elements seemed a bit over-bearing and silly at times. I was not impressed with these stupid robots and their cliched "humanity is bad" story. It did not fit into the story that well and the ending was pretty weird.

On the flip side, I actually loved the few fight sequences - a little over the top but very entertaining.

Despite the weak plot, The World's End screenplay and cast is a charm. The guys had good chemistry and they are able to keep me engaged in this film with their witty dialogue. Simon Pegg's portrayal of Gary King is perfect; he leads the way and provides much of the humor. There are funny moments in this movie but at the same time I was a little disappointed because it was nearly not as funny as I had hoped for -- some of the jokes fell flat.

It's not as great as the previous movies but it was still amusing and entertaining for parts. The World's End could have used a much better plot.

Rating: 7/10

  1. Aww, I thought this one was great, lol. I will say that some of the plot elements did feel like a bit of a retread of what they already did in Shaun of the Dead, but outside of that, I wasn't really bothered by anything.

  2. Good review Shawna. So much fun, even if I still have to say that Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead were better. Just a tad bit, though.
