Review - Planes (2013)

Starring Dane Cook, Stacy Keach and Teri Hatcher.
Directed by Klay Hall.

Synopsis: Cars gets a spin-off with this Disney Toon Studios film starring the voice of Dane Cook as a vertically-challenged plane with high hopes of becoming an air racer.

I watched a movie like this earlier this year but it actually had snails and shit and was called Turbo. Planes follows along the same line, where we meet an underprivileged crop-dusting plane called Dusty (Dane Cook), who has big dreams of becoming an air racer.

Despite finishing out of contention for the air racing competition, Dusty gets lucky when one of the competitors is disqualified, thus he is able to compete. We basically follow Dusty on his journey, see him bond with characters who didn't believe in him while overcoming obstacles. Although it takes place in the Cars universe, it is not nearly as colorful, funny and spunky as the first Cars movie, even though they borrowed heavily from it. However I did chuckle a few times, thanks mostly to the air race competitors, especially El Chupacabra (Carlos Alazraqui). The voicings were fine but there were moments when the humor and dialogue fell flat.

Planes tries and offers nothing new. It is one of the most ordinary animated movie you'll ever watch; it has all the cliches in the book and was just not as fun as I expected it be. I wouldn't consider it a horrible spinoff but it surely is nothing you'll remember five minutes later.

Rating: 5/10
