Top 10 Movie Trilogies

After watching an impressive Batman trilogy, the need to expound on other impressive trilogies arose. If a movie does well at the Box Office, it may spawn a sequel and a three-quel (third film) and that's where the term trilogy comes from. In some trilogies, usually it's the first movie which is deemed the best but some trilogies are known for consistency and awesomeness throughout. Some trilogies have added a fourth or even a fifth film to their franchise but the heart may be with the first three films. These are my favorite movie trilogies of all times along with some honorable mentions.

Honorable Mentions
Austin Powers Trilogy
The Evil Dead Trilogy
Die Hard Trilogy (Original)
Back To The Future Trilogy

10. National Lampoon Vacation Trilogy
Movies: National Lampoon's Vacation, Christmas Vacation and European Vacation.

The Griswolds are definitely one of America's most loved family and they provide us with non-stop laughter on their various family outings. The series spawned a fourth film, Vegas Vacation, but we don't really care about that one lol.

9. Three Colors Trilogy
Movies: Three Colors: Blue, Three Colors: White and Three Colors: Red

A beautiful trilogy, both emotionally and philosophically. The Three Colors Trilogy represents the French flag and the concept of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. The series featured solid acting and directing, not to mention great musical scores.

8. Mad Max Trilogy
Movies: Mad Max, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior and Max Max Beyond Thunderdome.
One of the most underrated trilogies, The Mad Max trilogy was thrilling, loud, fast paced and entertaining. A great look into post-apocalyptic Earth with great action sequences. Part punk western, part exploitation film, part rough-and-ready horror movie, Mad Max brilliantly combines a strong thesis about energy.

7. Indiana Jones (Original)
Movies: Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade.
Even though there was a fourth film (which no one liked), the original trilogy was fun, exciting and fast paced. It inspired many films today such as National Treasure, The Da Vinci Code and so on. Starring Harrison Ford as the famous Indy, a university professor who goes on high-end adventures usually involving historical artifacts and ancient ruins. Harrison Ford reprises his role as Indiana Jones in all films. Why everyone loves Indiana Jones? Enjoyable humor and great action sequences. Not to mention venturing into a historical unknown.

6. The Bourne Trilogy
Movies: The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum.
The Bourne Legacy is in theaters right now so let's disregard and focus on the original trilogy which included Matt Damon. From thrilling chase scenes to cool shaky-cam action sequences, The Bourne Trilogy was breath-taking. Each film got better as it went along and even though, a new director was introduced for the second film, he picked up right where the previous director had left off and delivered a fantastic closing. Great direction, great film editing and a solid cast throughout.

5. Star Wars (Original)
Movies: Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Episode VI: The Return of The Jedi.

The original Star Wars films were fun and entertaining with very likable characters. The series spawned a prequel trilogy which was nowhere near the awesomeness of its predecessors. A sci-fi space opera at its best.

4. Batman/Dark Knight Trilogy
Movies: Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.
Christopher Nolan introduced us to a darker Batman series and it worked perfectly. A franchise that became a joke was suddenly revitalized. The most commendable thing about The Dark Knight series was how beautifully written it was. A crime epic with a touch of superhero theme, The Dark Knight series is unforgettable.

3. The Man With No Name/Dollars Trilogy
Movies: A Fistful Of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

When it comes to spaghetti Westerns, Clint Eastwood rules and it was no different in the Man With No Name trilogy aka The Dollars trilogy. The series boast memorable performances, compelling and engaging story. The Dollars trilogy is iconic and defined a new era for Westerns.

2.  Toy Story Trilogy
Movies: Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3
I believe animated movies do not get the credit they deserve. Why? because they are animated. However the Toy Story films were just awesome. A trilogy made for kids but it also appeases greatly to adults. With epic characters, voice-overs and strong script, this is one of those trilogies that got better and better with each movie. Enjoyable and a tad bit emotional.

1. The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy
Movies: The Fellowship of the Ring, the Two Towers and The Return Of The King.

Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R Tolkien's books was nothing less than perfect. Brilliant, emotional, beautifully acted and directed, The Lord Of The Rings trilogy set the bar for all trilogies and trilogies to come. Winner of 17 academy awards in total and labeled as the best selling trilogy of all time, LOTR is a EPIC journey and look into Middle Earth.

  2. Not a bad list at all. Honestly forget about the Ocean's trilogy but i love them. The Matrix trilogy kinda lost its touch from the second film. The prequel Star Wars trilogy was okay but underwhelming

    1. oh, I would have included Indiana Jones if I didn't utterly loathe the second film. I honestly prefer Crystal Skull.

  5. Love how you eliminate a couple of 4s in these franchises!

To me Toy Story is the main one all three films are great in their own way and number three might be the strongest of the bunch. Pretty good to have such late sequel being the best.

  6. Good choices, the only change I would make is the Godfather trilogy according to actual box office sales, current and overall most watched trilogies should be number two.
