Review - Stand Up Guys (2013)

Starring Christopher Walken, Al Pacino and Alan Arkin.
Directed by Fisher Stevens.

My first 2013 movie turned out to be an absolute stalemate. One would think a movie which features three legendary actors would be quite entertaining but this was the total opposite.

The movie begins with the release of conman Val (Al Pacino) from prison after serving 28years. He meets up with his old buddy Doc (Christopher Walken). The two get reacquainted and decides to have some fun on the night, even though it might be Val's last night alive.

The performances weren't that bad in this movie but no performance really stood out. Then again these actors didnt have much to work with because the script is horrible. Very horrible. The movie opens up very slow and with constant knocks and stale jokes at Val and Doc's ages -- hence the references to medication, hypertension, sex, erections throughout the film. The dialogue for most part, sounded chopped up and stale. Even when the movie tried to be funny, the mediocre script wouldn't let it. The storyline isn't bad and even reminded me a little of 'In Bruges' but I think they should have incorporated more humor and action into it. The very few action scenes were okay; it was kinda cool seeing these old men being bad-asses, even if it was only for 5 minutes.

All in all, it was nice seeing these old dudes come together. However I just wished they were given more to work with. This could have been a solid flick but instead we had to watch Walken, Pacino and even Arkin sleepwalk their way through this horrible writing.

Rating: 3/10
