Top 15 Best Movies of 2012

I revealed a couple of movies I felt were overlooked and a few overrated ones; now it's time to reveal my top favorite movies of the past year. I've decided to highlight my Top 15 movies instead of the regular Top 10 because I thoroughly believe these films deserve mentioning and love. However I've decided to seperate my favorite Animated film and documentary and highlight which I thought was the best last year. Check it out:

Documentary of the Year
The Imposter
A haunting and unbelievable true story of a man who tricked the world.

Animated Movie of the Year
Wreck-It Ralph
A fun tale with great voice-overs and video game references which will have you drowned in nostalgia.

Here's my top 15 movies of 2012, along with some honorable mentions of course.

15. Bernie
Based on a true story, Bernie is a charming and a somewhat unbelievable story of what I would call a "Lovable Murderer". Jack Black with his best performance to date and will have you fall inlove with the character, just like everyone else did.

14. Headhunters
A low-key but impressive foreign suspense thriller that will keep you engaged and on the edge of your seat. I loved the characters and the storyline was well executed.

13. The Master
Paul Thomas Anderson brings us the story of Freddie Quell and his association with Lancaster Dodd, the leader of the cult, The Cause. Beautifully acted and written, with breathtaking cinematography, The Master is yet another fine addition to PTA mature and intelligent filmmaking.

12. Silver Linings Playbook
I was surprised at how enjoyable this movie was, especially the dialogue. Boosted by great performances from Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and even Robert DeNiro, Silver Linings Playbook was as crazy as its characters made it.

11. Holy Motors
A film not liked by many, but best be known Holy Motors highlights the beauty and art of cinema through the weird and daily activities of Monsieur Oscar. Lovely performance, or should I say -- performances by Denis Lavant.

10. Django Unchained
Tarantino is back at it again, this time he brings us back to the days of slavery where one former slave will risk it all to save his wife. Django Unchained features superb performances, violent/gore action sequences and Tarantino's signature sharp, witty dialogue with consistent humor. An engaging and entertaining film.

9. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Despite a backlash from critics, I thoroughly enjoyed Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Hobbit. A few deviations from the novel but still, he was able to execute and capture the essence of The Hobbit and Middle Earth well and left me drowned in nostalgia. Great action sequences and fun characters.

8. Life of Pi
The best movie and 3D experience of 2012. Life of Pi was breathtaking visually with a touching story of survival and faith. If you havent seen seen it in 3D, you missed a hell of a viewing.

7. The Raid: Redemption
Hands down the best action movie of the year. A mixture of jaw dropping martial arts, gore and blazing gun fights, The Raid was entertaining from start to finish.

6. Sister
A heart-felt story of a boy who steals from rich guests to take care of his "sister". A beautifully written and beautifully acted drama, further heightened by the amazing chemistry between the two main characters.

5. Argo
Argo is Ben Affleck's third time in the director's chair and boy did he deliver. With superb direction, Argo was tense, riveting, well acted and captured the real life event nicely.

4. The Cabin in The Woods
Entertaining, creative and mind-blowing, The Cabin in the Woods put all cliched horror flicks to shame.

3. Moonrise Kingdom
A fun and vibrant story of adolescent love. Moonrise Kingdom features great performances, lovely cinematography and a great score. Wes Anderson did it again.

2. Lincoln
Not only is Lincoln an excellent look at one of America's most beloved president,  it also highlights a very touchy period in American History but did so in fine fashion -- and makeup. Great performances, great score, great cinemotagraphy and a solid history lesson.

and last but not least...

1.The Intouchables
The best movie I have watched this past year. The Intouchables is the story of a paralyzed man who forms a unique bond with his new caretaker. A bond so beautiful and charming, it carried this film to extreme comfort and smiles. Great dialogue, superb acting and a lovely story.

Here are some other fine films that could have made my list..

Honorable Mentions
Marvel's The Avengers
Dredd 3D
Ruby Sparks
The Sessions
Seven Psychopaths
Oslo, August 31st
Looper
The Impossible

  4. It's great to see The Hobbit making your list. I think it's a film that didn't warrant the critical lashing it got. Your top 5 is fantastic. I just need to catch up on The Intouchables (which I'm ashamed to say I haven't seen considering it has become such an international hit).
