I'm Jamaican and nothing makes me happier than seeing my country and/or culture being featured in movies. Some actors, who have played Jamaican characters, have actually pulled off our accent decently. While others I found myself saying, "But.... we don't really sound like that... at all". From a Jamaican's point of view, here are five films featuring Jamaican character(s) that I found their accent to be off. But hey, you still have to appreciate their efforts lol.
5. How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998)
This movie showcased Jamaica in a good way. Taye Diggs presence was lovely but his accent had me confused. One minute he sounded American, another minute he's trying to sound Caribbean. Taye needed some more practice on this one.
4. Cool Runnings (1993)
Cool Runnings is a film that pretty much represented our island so I was a bit disappointed that the Jamaican characters sounded so forced and unconvincing. Still, it shed some positive light on our Olympic Bobsled team.
3. Beastly (2011)
Zola (Lisa Gay Hamilton) was the maid of the monster but her Jamaican accent was also a monster in this movie. Both the accent and the film itself was truly off.
2. Meet Joe Black (1998)
I like this movie and I love Brad Pitt. The scene with him and Lois Kelly-Miller speaking "Patois" was heartwarming, even though his accent sounded ridiculous. lol
1. Tower Heist (2011)
In the movie Precious, Chyna Layne's Jamaican accent was decent. Why didn't Gabourey Sidibe get some practice from Chyna for her role in Tower Heist? Gabourey's Jamaican accent was cringing, luckily I still enjoyed the movie.
