Best and Worst Movies of 2013 So Far

This year in films have been quite underwhelming so I'm grateful for the few good movies that have graced my eyes so far. Check out my favorite, worst, underwhelming and most surprising movies of 2013 so far.

Top 5 Favorite Movies
Upstream Color has been crowned my favorite movie of the year so far. Many may deem it confusing but I found myself understanding and admiring its beauty and totally submerged in its world. The winners of the summer blockbusters are Star Trek Into Darkness and Pacific Rim; both of which had breathtaking cinematography and great fight scenes. Before Midnight was soothing conclusion to a very underrated trilogy. Honorable mentions include: Despicable Me 2, Mud, The Hunt, Warm Bodies and 42.

1. Upstream Color
2. Before Midnight
3. Star Trek Into Darkness
4. Pacific Rim
5. This Is The End

Top 5 Worst Movies
Of course a year in film would not be complete without some crappy movies. What worries me is that the number of crappy films are forever increasing and may overshadow the actual decent films. Scary Movie 5 is hands down the worst movie of 2013 so far and furthermore shows how dead and pathetic the spoof genre has become. Honorable mentions include: Oblivion, Stand Up Guys, Parker and Beautiful Creatures.

1. Scary Movie 5
2. The Big Wedding
3. Movie 43
4. Identity Thief
5. Texas Chainsaw 3D

Top 5 Surprising Movies
Every year we watch a few movies that we initially thought would be shitty judging by the trailer but they turn out to be quite decent and enjoyable. This Is The End is one such case and is easily the funniest movie of the year. Spring Breakers overly surprised me; it turned out to be this wild atmospheric crime drama. The Call got a lot of undeserving hate from critics but the movie was pretty tense for most parts.
Honorable mentions include: Snitch, Odd Thomas, 21 & Over and Dark Skies.

1. This is The End
2. Spring Breakers
3. Jack The Giant Slayer
4. The Call
5. Dead Man Down

Top 5 Disappointing Movies
It sucks when you have high expectations for a particular movie and it left you feeling all underwhelmed and disappointed. I was pumped for Man Of Steel and was left disappointed at how poorly it was done. I'm a huge admirer of director Danny Boyle but I think he went a bit over his head in his new movie Trance. Monsters University is a decent prequel story but I was still a bit disappointed at the lack of humor. Honorable mentions include: Epic, Stoker, Only God Forgives and Gangster Squad.

1. Man of Steel
2. Oz The Great and Powerful
3. Trance
4. Mama
5. Monsters University

  1. Yay for Warm Bodies love, even if it is just in an honorable mention, lol. Also definitely on board with Man of Steel for most disappointing of the year so far. As for the best, I personally think that Iron Man 3, White House Down, Stoker, Mud, and Warm Bodies would probably round out my top 5, with an honorable nod to The Place Beyond the Pines.

  3. Nice lists Shawna! Oz The Great and Powerful was horrible really. Not sure what I was expecting from that film but it wasn't that. hee hee.

Spring Breakers without a doubt was a huge surprise...it was so deep and surreal.

Movie 43...I think I was the only one on earth that gave it a positive review. I stand by it!! :)

  4. I'm in the minority of people that loved Oz the Great and Powerful. It looks beautiful and it made me laugh heaps. It's not as good as The Wizard of Oz, but I'm really happy they made a prequel.

Oh, and I totally agree with your ranking of Upstream Color as number one :) haha
